Something for everyone at NGS Festival Weekend and Brewery Opening

The popular 'Yellow Book' garden, Hunmanby Grange is participating in the NGS (National Garden Scheme) Festival Weekend on 7th and 8th of June.

The opening of the Yorkshire coast garden coincides with the annual open weekend for the award winning micro-brewery Wold Top Brewery that is based at the eponymous farm.

Hunmanby Grange is one of only four gardens throughout Yorkshire where families are invited to celebrate a Teddy Bear's Picnic. Garden owner, Gill Mellor said: "It should be great fun. Please don't be shy, bring your teddies, your children and a picnic and have fun in our wooded picnic area."

For just £4.00 visitors will also be able to tour the beautiful and interesting garden that Gill Mellor has created despite its exposure to the elements and a challenging soil. Gill will share her stories about how the garden has evolved over a quarter of a century into a series of gardens that have been developed depending on shelter, aspect, views and need. There will also be plants on sale and the Yorkshire branch of Butterfly Conservation will be talking to visitors about the importance of the local area to butterflies.

Visitors to the micro-brewery will see where and how the ales are made and will be able to talk to the brewery team about what makes Wold Top's beers award winning. There will be beer and refreshments, including Manor Farm Beef's hot pulled beef sandwiches and ice cream from Cream of the Wolds. There will also be special offers on bottled beers.

The gardens and the brewery will be open between 11am and 5pm on both days and proceeds from the entry money will go via the NGS to charity. St. Cuthbert's church in Burton Fleming will benefit from the proceeds from the refreshments.

Recently, Gill and Tom Mellor were presented with an engraved fork to commemorate 20 years of Hunmanby Grange opening for the NGS. In that time, it is estimated that the Mellors will have raised over £30,000 for the nursing, caring and gardening charities that the NGS supports. Last year, gardens in Yorkshire alone raised a record total of over £134,000.

This year the major beneficiaries of the charity will share between £2.2million them and include: Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices and Carers Trust. Significant, but smaller amounts will be donated to The Queen's Nursing Institute, Perennial and the National Trust and for the second year running, the NGS guest charity is Parkinsons UK. In addition, some of the funds will be used to sponsor 3 students in RHS gardens, in a bid to encourage people to enter a career in horticulture.

Founded in 1927, NGS has donated more than £22m to charity in the last 10 years.
