Microbrewery toasts premiere with bespoke beer

A Yorkshire coast microbrewery has brewed a bespoke beer to celebrate the premiere of a new play by one of the world's leading playwrights.

Wold Newton based Wold Top Brewery was asked by the team at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough to create a beer for Muddy Cows, which opened on 9th July.

Written and directed by BAFTA-winning playwright John Godber, who also produced the iconic rugby league comedy Up 'n' Under, Muddy Cows is performed by the Stephen Joseph Theatre Company and tells the story of Ex-England international rugby union player Maggie Deakin's final crunch match before she steps down as coach. It's a laugh out loud, bittersweet comedy that charts the personal battles that play out on the pitch as a team of surgeons, teachers, farmers, vets, beauticians, social workers and solicitors fight to excel in what was once uniquely a man's world.

Muddy Cow (3.7% ABV) is a light, easy drinking beer that is brewed using Wolds-grown barley, Northdown hops and water from the farm-based brewery's borehole.

The Stephen Joseph Theatre was founded in 1955 by theatrical pioneer Stephen Joseph who established the country's first theatre-in-the-round company on the first floor of the Public Library in Scarborough.
