Garden goers and ale fans undeterred by weather for charity garden opening

Posted by Wold Top Brewery on

Undeterred by one of the wettest Saturdays recorded this year, almost one hundred committed gardening and brewery fans braved the rain and helped to raise over £2,500 for charity.

NGS (National Garden Scheme) 'Yellow Book' garden Hunmanby Grange and Wold Top Brewery's annual open weekend had to contend with a very wet start on the Saturday, 7th June, but by the Sunday, the sun was shining and the numbers increased almost fourfold.

Brewery owner and garden creator, Gill Mellor said: "We raised over £2,000 for the NGS's designated charities that include Marie Curie and Parkinson's UK and £500 for St. Cuthbert's Church in neighbouring Burton Fleming.

"We were disappointed with the weather, but it didn't stop people coming and the Brewery Tours were busy all day. Credit must go tour amazing team of staff, family and friends who made sure that the visitors were well looked after and a special thanks to Baby Emma Shipley from Manor Farm Beef who, despite being a week overdue, managed to wait until the Monday to make her appearance!"

Recently, Gill and Tom Mellor were presented with an engraved fork to commemorate 20 years of Hunmanby Grange opening for the NGS. In that time, it is estimated that the Mellors will have raised over £30,000 for the nursing, caring and gardening charities that the NGS supports. Last year, gardens in Yorkshire alone raised a record total of over £134,000.

Founded in 1927, NGS has donated more than £22m to charity in the last 10 years.

Hunmanby Grange is also the home of Muddy Souls Events; an innovative wedding and party events company that takes advantage of the brewery, the enviable top of the Wolds location and the TV featured garden to make a unique events venue.
