Exciting parade will raise the curtain on Coastival 2016
Seafront venue for grand event opening
A spectacular seafront parade, featuring giant ships and sea creatures, will raise the curtain on February’s Coastival arts event in Scarborough.
Ireland-based Spraoi, who stage spectacular street theatre and parades, will present ‘Polar Quest’ on the evening of 12th February.
And that will set the scene for a fabulous weekend of music, arts and entertainment for Coastival 2016.
Polar Quest will take its inspiration from one of the most daring expeditions ever undertaken, the ‘Endurance’ expedition to the South Pole, led by Ernest Shackleton, an ill-fated attempt to walk across Antarctica.
Crowds along Scarborough seafront will see Spraoi recreate the epic journey of Shackleton and his crew and their fight for survival, after their vessel became ice-bound.
Coastival’s organisers, Scarborough-based arts development agency Create, say Spraoi will be an exciting addition to Coastival.
Director Wendy Holroyd said: “There is nothing like a spectacular parade to get a festival off to the best possible start and Spraoi come to us with a fantastic reputation for staging wonderful shows in their home country and further afield.
“We look forward to them kicking off Coastival on a grand scale in February.”
The parade will be just one of an exciting line-up of events, concerts and art commissions lined up for Coastival 2016, from 12th to 14th February.
Rock band Cast will headline with a concert at the Spa Grand Hall on the evening of Friday 12th February, supported by Two Skies.
